What I Do
I'm an experienced proofreader, copyeditor, and technical and
creative writer who loves what I do and have used that
expertise to assist clients with a variety of projects. I've
worked with Street Sense, a local homeless newspaper; Best
Friends Network, an animal outreach and rescue organization;
and the DC chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.
I have also served in an editorial and production capacity for
several associations in the DC metro area, and currently work
as a writer and editor in the federal government.

throughout the process of my project. Her prices were very
reasonable and she always delivered my edits on the dates

"It was a great pleasure working with Jennifer Singleton. I had an
article that needed editing and was referred to Ms. Singleton for
the job. She was very professional when we discussed my
expectations, her expectations and compensations. I was very
pleased when the project was finished on time and I was
extremely impressed with the finished work. I will definitely be
recommending Ms. Singleton to others while also continuing to use
her service." -Melissa Hughes, contributor, Gettysburg Times

This page would be incomplete without highlighting the first
formal recognition of my writing talent. In 2006, I received an
Honorable Mention for my short story titled Unspoken Duty.
The honor was bestowed on me by the Shrine of the Black
Madonna Bookstore and Cultural Center in their “Write is
Might” short story competition.
Story Synopsis: A woman tells the story of her repeated
encounters with special people that only she can see.
How I Got Started
I loved reading and writing; my bookshelf contained more
grammar guides than chick lit novels; and I was fascinated
with the publishing industry. Though these were obvious clues,
I stubbornly continued to pursue other employment avenues.
In fact, the thought of an editorial career didn't appear on my
radar until just a few years ago.
What was I doing before then? I was busy accumulating
random work experience that didn't reflect my interests
or skills. I was feeling frustrated at my inability to be happy
that I at least had a job. I was hard at work writing my
characters’ stories during lunch breaks and thinking to myself I
gotta publish this one, I won't let it live on my hard drive
forever. And then I decided enough was enough. I discovered
that what I really wanted to do was work with authors and
publishers, edit manuscripts, write articles and witty headlines,
and wake up each day feeling good about where I was going.
With no editorial or production experience to get my foot in
the door of any publications department, I sought ways to
perform these duties for free—"freelancing" at its finest.
Fortunately for me, the DC area offers many volunteer
opportunities that can provide a pathway to paid ones.
Because of my science background, I also started taking
editing, proofreading, and technical writing courses to
become more competitive in an editorial job market saturated
with English and communications majors.
